Episode 093 :: Elana Rosenbaum :: The Heart of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
Elana Rosenbaum
Senior MBSR teacher Elana Rosenbaum joins us to speak about teaching mindfulness, and her new book The Heart of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction: A MBSR Guide for Clinicians and Clients.
Mindfulness programs have started to become quite common in the U.S., and while it’s good to see more accessibility to those who may benefit from learning contemplative practice and the science of how it can influence our neurology, there is also a risk that comes along for the ride: it really does become “common”. Some programs may be taught by those who haven’t really invested the time to learn and develop their own practice, let alone been reviewed and vetted by experienced experts in the field before starting to teach. Of course, that can lead to less that helpful results for participants, and worse — it can erode the integrity of the profession, making things more difficult for competent, qualified teachers.
On top of that, industrializing a production line of mindfulness teachers runs the risk of losing an important, and I would suggest foundational aspect of programs like MBSR, that of heartfulness, care, and love. Our guest today has a wonderful skill and talent in keeping that love inseparable from her teaching, her personal practice, and how she is in the world.
Elana Rosenbaum, MS, MSW, LICSW, has been integrating mindfulness with psychotherapy and healthcare since 1984. She is one of the original teachers of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as the Center for Mindfulness, working directly with Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of MBSR. Elana is a sought after mindfulness coach, teacher, speaker, workshop leader, meditation retreat leader, and consultant, and has trained thousands across the world. She has a psychotherapy private practice in Worcester, MA.
