Episode 147 :: Elizabeth A. Stanley, Ph.D. :: Widen the Window: Training Your Brain and Body to Thrive During Stress and Recover from Trauma

Elizabeth A. Stanley

Elizabeth A. Stanley joins us to speak about her new book, Widen the Window: Training Your Brain and Body to Thrive During Stress and Recover from Trauma.

As mindfulness grows in popularity and availability, there comes a widening of needs that it might meet. With more people trying it also comes the inevitability that more people doing so will have a history of trauma in their lives. While mindfulness practice may be helpful for those with traumatic experiences, it does need to be the right time for someone to participate in a program, the teacher needs to be not just adequately trained but have their own long-standing practice, as well as an understanding of how to best work with those with a history of trauma. Today’s guest knows this territory well.

Elizabeth A. Stanley, PhD, is an associate professor of security studies at Georgetown University. She is the creator of Mindfulness-Based Mind Fitness Training (MMFT)®, taught to thousands in civilian and military high-stress environments. An award-winning author and U.S. Army veteran with service in Asia and Europe, she holds degrees from Yale, Harvard, and MIT. She’s also is a certified practitioner of Somatic Experiencing, a body-based trauma therapy.
